Harvard researchers talk about fighting superbugs with blue light

Researchers at Harvard Medical School have published an excellent overview of how antimicrobial blue light (aBL) can help tackle one of healthcare's biggest challenges: antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are one of the fastest-growing global health threats, and researchers at Harvard Medical School's Wellman Center for Photomedicine are investigating antimicrobial blue light as a promising new way to combat them. Unlike antibiotics, blue light at specific visible wavelengths (typically 405-470 nm) activates naturally occurring molecules inside bacteria, triggering the formation of reactive oxygen species that damage bacterial membranes, proteins and DNA until the cells are destroyed.
According to the Harvard researchers, this multi-target mechanism makes it much more difficult for bacteria to develop resistance than with conventional antibiotics. Their studies have demonstrated effectiveness against challenging pathogens including MRSA, Acinetobacter baumannii and microbial biofilms. In a recent large-animal wound study, blue light treatment reduced MRSA levels by more than 99.99% compared with untreated wounds, highlighting its potential as a future treatment for difficult infections.
While clinical use against severe infections still requires further research and human trials, the growing body of evidence reinforces the potential of antimicrobial blue light as a valuable addition to existing infection control methods. As antibiotic resistance continues to increase worldwide, light-based technologies may become an important complementary tool in the fight against harmful microbes.
