The Belgian food tech company Paleo, known for its pioneering work in producing animal protein from yeast, has adopted Spectral Blue technology to maintain bacterial control in their laboratories.
Paleo is at the forefront of technological innovation in food production. By using precision fermentation, they produce animal proteins with yeast, creating bio-identical proteins to those found in animal meat, without involving animals. The result is indistinguishable from traditional meat.
To ensure high-quality outcomes, Paleo relies on top-notch hygiene control and disinfection within their premises. In the spring of 2024, they installed a Spectral Blue SALO XL disinfection device into a laminar cabinet in their laboratory. Unlike traditional UVC-based disinfection, SALO XL does not require the removal of any items from the cabinet during use. Held in place with two strong magnets, it’s easy to install by simply plugging it into an electrical outlet. The SALO XL device is maintenance-free and, with an average lifetime of 50,000 hours, it’s truly carefree.
The Spectral Blue MWHI® blue light disinfection technology is uniquely safe for people and materials, allowing continuous use even while personnel are working in the same room. If needed, the blue light can be easily turned off during working hours, but Paleo has opted for continuous operation. The constant shine of blue light has transformed Paleo’s lab atmosphere in an exciting way, with one employee describing it as a “super nice science fiction lab.”

Beyond their cutting-edge technology, both Paleo and Spectral Blue share a commitment to sustainability. Paleo's methods significantly reduce land, energy, and water use, contributing to a lower carbon and water footprint. Spectral Blue's technology reduces the need for harmful chemicals and dangerous UVC radiation. This innovative approach not only effectively prevents bacterial contamination and keeps staff and consumers safe but also ensures a consistent, automatic, and eco-friendly disinfection process.
After nearly a year of use, Paleo has detected no contaminations where Spectral Blue MWHI® has been in use and is considering replacing all old UVC devices with Spectral Blue as the UVC devices reach the end of their life cycle.
“Innovating in food safety means choosing solutions that are both effective and sustainable. With Spectral Blue we ensure a safe environment without the constraints of UV radiation - allowing work to continue while maintaining hygiene. This is a step forward in sustainability, ease of use, and reliable protection, fully aligned with our values at Paleo”, says Ludovic Duminuco, Fermentation Team Lead at Paleo.
